Background

Shell is preparing to drill another ultra-deepwater well offshore Namibia in the Orange Basin, following promising results from its Merlin-1X discovery earlier this year. Shell Namibia Country Chair Eduardo Rodriguez Tamayo confirmed that five months of prep work with the Stena DrillMAX drillship are complete, with drilling set to begin shortly. The move follows the April 2026 Merlin-1X exploration, which uncovered a high-quality light oil reservoir, Shell’s most encouraging subsurface finding on PEL 39 to date. Shell operates the licence alongside joint venture partners QatarEnergy and Namcor, as work continues to assess the commercial potential of its offshore discoveries.
