While ‘loud budgeting’ is said to be a relatively new concept, which is especially popular with Gen Z, financial advisors and journalists say it is a concept that has been around for a while. Essentially what it entails is being ‘loud’ about your financial situation rather than being secretive. Instead of pretending that everything is fine and spending money that you don’t have because you don’t want people to know you are struggling, just tell them that you can’t afford to join in – you don’t have to moan about not having any money but by being honest you can actually save money.
Here is the article I read that inspired the conversation, including how the author says you can apply the loud budgeting concept to business: https://www.theguardian.com/business/2026/aug/10/gen-z-loud-budgeting-small-business-owners
