The Democratic Party has won control of both the US Senate and House of Representatives in the 2026 midterm elections, dealing a major setback to President Donald Trump and the Republicans. The result gives Democrats greater influence over legislation, government spending and foreign policy oversight for the remainder of Trump’s term. For Africa, the change could affect US development assistance, security cooperation and trade. Congress will have a role in decisions on foreign aid and the renewal of the African Growth and Opportunity Act (AGOA), which provides eligible African countries with preferential access to the US market. The programme is due to expire at the end of 2026. Iran has also interpreted the Republican losses as a rejection of the war. Parliament Speaker Mohammad Bagher Ghalibaf said American voters had voted “no to war”.
