5 Things You Probably Didn’t Know About Journey’s Steve Perry

Background

Steve Perry is more than just the soaring voice behind Journey. Here are a few surprising facts about the legend:

1. He almost didn’t become Journey’s frontman

Before joining Journey, Perry was leading a band called Alien Project in California. During that time, he faced a tragic blow: his bandmate Richard Michaels died in a car crash. Overwhelmed by grief, Perry seriously considered walking away from music altogether. Meanwhile, Journey’s manager, Walter “Herbie” Herbert, heard an Alien Project demo, tracked Perry down, and made the offer. Although Perry initially hesitated, his mother encouraged him to take the call — and the rest is rock history.

2. He hit pause on his career for love

It’s easy to assume Perry stepped back from music because of burnout or the pressures of fame. But the real reason was deeply personal. In the 2000s, Perry’s partner, Kellie Nash, was diagnosed with breast cancer. He withdrew from public life to support her during her illness. After her passing in 2012, Perry stayed out of the spotlight for a while—but in 2018 he returned with Traces, an album shaped by themes of love, grief, healing, and rebirth.

3. His vocal range is extraordinary

Perry wasn’t just a powerful vocalist — his voice was remarkably high and expressive. He’s been praised for possessing a countertenor range, capable of spanning from F♯2 up to A5. Critics have likened his tone to soul greats like Sam Cooke and Aretha Franklin. In fact, Jon Bon Jovi dubbed him “The Voice.” Rolling Stone placed him at #76 on its list of the 100 Greatest Singers of All Time.

4. Music ran in his blood

Perry’s musical journey started early. Raised in Hanford, California, he was deeply influenced by his father, who co-owned a radio station and sang. When Perry turned 12, his mother gifted him a gold eighth-note pendant — a symbolic gesture that fueled his path. That same year, he heard Sam Cooke’s “Cupid” on the radio, and it resonated deeply. From that moment, he felt destined for a life in music.

5. “Oh Sherrie” came from his heart

One of Perry’s most memorable hits, “Oh Sherrie,” was inspired by his then-girlfriend, Sherrie Swafford. The song resonated widely — it climbed to No. 3 on the Billboard charts and its video became a staple on MTV in the 1980s. Perry’s knack for channeling raw emotion into his music helped transform tracks like “Faithfully” and “Open Arms” into timeless fan favorites.
