The Stages of Love

todayFebruary 6, 2026

Background

I saw an article on the Angry Therapist Facebook page that speaks about the different stages of love, and how many relationships don’t go through all the stages.  In summary, love usually starts like magic. Everything feels exciting, intense, and full of possibility. You’re high on chemistry, connection, and the feeling of being chosen — and that part is meant to be enjoyed.

Then reality shows up. Differences surface, old patterns kick in, and you start having the same arguments in different ways. This is where many people think love is failing, when really, the fantasy is just wearing off.

At that point, there’s a choice: walk away, or stay and do the work. Staying means learning how to listen, repair, and take responsibility — not just for the relationship, but for yourself. If both people do that, something deeper replaces the spark: trust, safety, and a steady kind of love you build over time.

The real danger isn’t conflict — it’s drift. Life gets busy, changes go unspoken, and connection slowly fades. Love doesn’t die from one big moment; it fades when it’s left unattended.

Real love isn’t the kind that sweeps you off your feet. It’s the kind that helps you stand.
