Hake quota cut raises fishing industry job fears.

todayNovember 6, 2026

Background

Cabinet has approved a 12.8% reduction in the total allowable catch for hake, setting the harvest cap at 116 000 metric tons for the 2026/2027 fishing season. The policy decision follows scientific assessments of biomass stocks in Namibian waters, aiming to prevent over-exploitation and ensure long-term stock recovery. However, the 17 000-tonne reduction has raised concerns within the fishing sector over potential impacts on sea-going crews and land-based processing jobs, particularly at major hubs in Walvis Bay and Lüderitz. Cabinet also approved the total allowable catch for rock lobster at 180 metric tons for the upcoming season.
