Checkers testing the Xpress Smart Trolley

When I go shopping I have my set route and, depending on what we’ve decided to cook for the week, know exactly what I need to get so don’t really need guidance through the store or to know what my running total is, but I can understand how it would be useful and on the odd occassion where I do have to buy something that isn’t on the usual list, wouldn’t mind being able to key it into the trolley and be told where exactly to find it in the store.

Much like self-checkouts in the rest of the world though the key questions I have about implementing the system is what it would mean for jobs – would there be fewer people employed as cashiers – and of course, though I am sure the majority of people are honest, how it would have to be policed to make sure people don’t try to put items in the trolley without scanning them, or having scanned them as something cheaper (perhaps the RFID chips I mentioned on-air would solve that problem).

I also wonder whether or not you’d be allowed to take the trolley out of the store or, like with the basket trollies at most stores, you’d see people having to transfer their groceries to a different trolley before being able to take them out to their car.
