The City of Windhoek expects to spend more than N$15 million to fix the potholes caused by the recent heavy rains.

Windhoek’s spokesperson, Lydia Amutenya, says the total cost may increase as more damage is assessed.

Amutenya said the funds will cover the immediate repairs, but additional resources may be needed if the situation worsens.

“While this amount covers the initial scope of repair, it’s also anticipated that we are likely to need more resources—obviously depending on how the situation evolves. However, we will definitely find means to secure more resources that may be needed to restore the road network to a safe and reliable condition as soon as possible. So that’s where we are—N$15.1 million for now. But obviously, as the rain continues, the possibility that we may also see that a lot of infrastructure is being damaged or affected, and that cost also increases. But that is the basic estimation that we have at the moment,” said Amutenya.

Amutenya said the city is currently prioritising repairs based on the severity of damage and traffic volume.

“The City of Windhoek has prioritised repairs to the most severely affected parts of the road network. Our maintenance teams have already started making temporary repairs to the potholes in high-traffic areas. The temporary fixes involve filling potholes with soilcrete—a mixture of sand and cement—as an immediate measure to ensure safer travel until more permanent repairs can be made,” said Amutenya.

Amutenya added that the timeline for completing the repairs remains uncertain, as it depends on when the rainy season ends.

She urged residents to be patient while temporary repairs are being made.

Heavy rains have damaged roads in 24 suburbs across Windhoek, including Katutura, Khomasdal, Okuryangava, Auasblick, and Windhoek North.
