Uganda’s security agencies are facing renewed scrutiny following allegations that government critics have been abducted, detained and intimidated. An investigation by Al Jazeera details accounts from journalists, social media users and families of missing people who claim that individuals critical of President Yoweri Museveni and military chief General Muhoozi Kainerugaba have been targeted. One family told the broadcaster that it has been unable to establish the whereabouts of a 17-year-old boy who was reportedly taken by armed men in February. The allegations have raised concerns about freedom of expression and the treatment of government critics in the country. Uganda’s military has denied involvement in unlawful disappearances, maintaining that security agencies operate within the law and that suspects are brought before the courts.
