The High Court of Namibia is expected to hand down judgment today in the long-running legal battle between the Okahandja Municipality and community activist Kathleen Uri-khos over municipal property occupancy. Judge Boas Usiku is presiding over the matter, in which the local authority is seeking a court order to grant permission for the sheriff to evict Uri-khos and all sub-tenants residing at the Okahandja Home-Based Caregivers facility. The municipality brought the application on grounds that the municipal-owned property, originally renovated with international donor assistance to provide HIV/Aids home care and a community soup kitchen, was converted into an unauthorised private residential and commercial renting operation. However, Uri-khos and the affected residents have opposed the eviction, maintaining that the facility has provided essential shelter for vulnerable community members with nowhere else to go, and arguing that summary eviction without alternative land or housing allocation would leave dozens homeless.
