ANC support falls as South African election count continues

todayNovember 6, 2026

Background

The South African local government election count is continuing, with about 71 percent of votes counted nationally. The ANC is leading with 32 percent, followed by the DA on 25 percent, but the results point to a sharp decline in support for the governing party. The ANC is on course to lose around 14 percentage points compared with the 2021 municipal elections. The DA is leading in all three Gauteng metros, while ActionSA is also making gains, particularly in Tshwane. Cape Town remains the only metro where the DA is projected to secure an outright majority. Johannesburg and Tshwane appear headed for coalition governments, meaning negotiations between parties will be crucial.
