I was TODAY years old when I learnt that the ‘Hear no evil, See no evil, Speak no evil’ monkeys has an interesting history and meaning.
They are actually known as the three wise monkeys and originated in Japan. They are Japanese macaques, a common species in Japan.
Plus… each monkey actually has a name!
- Mizaru, who sees no evil, covering his eyes.
- Kikazaru, who hears no evil, covering his ears.
- Iwazaru, who speaks no evil, covering his mouth.
There are various meanings ascribed to the monkeys and the proverb including associations with being of good mind, speech and action. The phrase is often used to refer to those who deal with impropriety by turning a blind eye.
And NOW you know!
