On a remote reef 16,000 km from Paris, Olympic surfer Gabriel Medina gifted viewers one of the most unforgettable images of the 2024 Games. During the men’s surfing competition at Teahupo’o, Tahiti, Medina executed an airborne celebration that seemed almost otherworldly.
The stunning moment was captured by Agence France-Presse photographer Jérôme Brouillet, who described the conditions as “perfect” and the waves as “taller than expected.” From a boat nearby, Brouillet snapped a series of shots, one of which showcased Medina suspended in mid-air, seemingly floating on a Pacific cloud with divine poise.
Brouillet’s experience and anticipation paid off, capturing a shot so surreal that some initially suspected Photoshop. He explained, “It was not hard to take the picture. It was more about anticipating the moment and where Gabriel will kick off the wave.”
The reaction to the image was immediate and widespread, with social media buzzing and major outlets like ESPN sharing the photo. Brouillet modestly reflected on the moment, noting, “I got the shot of the day… but for sure everyone will forget about it next week.”
Medina, a three-time world champion, didn’t just wow with his moves. His perfect wave score of 9.9 (just shy of the coveted 10) and his serene celebration made headlines. Later, Medina attributed his success to his faith, quoting Philippians 4:13 on Instagram: “I can do everything through Him who strengthens me.”
This mesmerizing image is more than just a surf photo—it’s a testament to the beauty and athleticism of Olympic surfing, a sport still finding its place in the Games. Medina’s performance not only advances him in the competition but also elevates the sport’s profile on the world stage.
