Sananda Maitreya, formerly known as Terence Trent D’Arby, made waves in the music world with his debut album Introducing the Hardline According to Terence Trent D’Arby in 1987. His soulful voice and undeniable talent marked him as one of the most promising artists of his generation.

Sananda MaitreyaBut in 2001, the artist formerly known as Terence Trent D’Arby made a bold and surprising change—he embraced a new identity and became Sananda Maitreya. According to Maitreya, this transformation wasn’t just a simple rebranding; it was a spiritual rebirth. He described his former self as having died, allowing Sananda Maitreya to emerge and continue creating music from a fresh, liberated perspective.

The decision to change his name was deeply personal. Maitreya explained that his previous identity felt like a burden—one that limited his creative freedom and personal growth. By adopting the name Sananda Maitreya, he symbolically let go of past traumas and artistic constraints, embracing a new life where he could fully express himself without the expectations that came with his former fame.

Since the transformation, Maitreya has continued to create and release music independently, describing his evolving sound as “Post Millennium Rock.” His commitment to artistic freedom and self-discovery is evident in the rich tapestry of his later work, which blends rock, soul, and experimental elements into a genre-defying experience.

Recently, The Celeb Savant, Barret Edelstein, had the privilege of speaking with Sananda Maitreya. In this intimate and insightful podcast episode, they delve into his journey of transformation, the reasons behind his name change, and how his music has evolved since embracing his new identity.
