How do we form an emotional connection to different smells?

We all associate different smells with different emotions, right?

Well, we encounter most new smells in our youth. But did you know that we first start to associate smells with emotions before we are even born?

Turns out that not only can we hear things while in the womb, but we can experience smells too… and even more interesting, is the fact that smells widely considered unpleasant, such as… garlic, or even smoke, can be comforting to some people if they were exposed to these smells while in the womb. So, it would make sense that unpleasant smells can give some people the sensation of comfort. Because while a baby is growing in the womb, they are comforted, they feel safe and secure, so anything linked to their time in there must be comforting.

It makes sense now, doesn’t it?
