Background

A nationwide general strike is under way across France on Thursday, with intelligence services forecasting up to seven hundred thousand demonstrators outside Paris and as many as eighty thousand in the capital. French Interior Minister Laurent Nunez has announced the deployment of seventy thousand police officers and security forces, promising what he called an extremely firm response to any violence. The walkout comes after weeks of unrest fuelled by anger over the cost of living and inequality, five months before a presidential election. Ross Cullen reports from Paris.
