Fall Asleep to the Sound of a Train: The Caledonian Sleeper’s 10 Hour Soundscape

Background

If the gentle rhythm of a train has ever helped you drift off to sleep, the Caledonian Sleeper has turned that experience into a full audio journey. To mark World Sleep Day, the iconic overnight train company released a 10 hour ASMR style recording called Sleepscape, designed to recreate the calming atmosphere of travelling by rail through the night.

The track captures the familiar sounds of the Caledonian Sleeper service that runs between Inverness in Scotland and London. Listeners hear the subtle details that make overnight train travel so distinctive, including distant train whistles, the steady rolling of wheels on the tracks and the gradual shift in ambience as the train moves from quiet countryside into the bustle of a waking city.

The audio experience is divided into 10 chapters that follow the journey step by step. It begins with the moment passengers board the train, moves through time spent relaxing in the club car, and then settles into the quieter hours as travellers drift off to sleep. As the recording progresses, the atmosphere slowly changes again with the first hints of morning before the train arrives in London.

The project was created after research revealed that more than half of adults are not getting the recommended amount of sleep. By recreating the natural rhythm and gentle movement associated with train travel, the Caledonian Sleeper hopes the soundscape will help listeners relax, unwind and ultimately fall asleep more easily.
