todayNovember 2, 2026

Background

The death toll in the DRC’s severe Ebola outbreak has surpassed 5 000, according to the latest government figures released over the weekend. Health ministry data shows the outbreak has claimed 5 026 lives out of 10 350 recorded infections, marking a fatality rate of nearly 50% and sparking international concern over containment efforts. Caused by the Bundibugyo strain, which currently has no known vaccine or specific treatment, the epidemic has become the second-deadliest in history, trailing only the multi-country West African outbreak a decade ago. While nearly 2 700 people have recovered, health experts warn that the relentless spread of the virus continues to devastate families and communities across the region.
