A Wearable That Silences Your Voice to Everyone Except Your Phone

todayJanuary 14, 2026

Background

At Consumer Electronics Show, Japanese hardware company Shiftall unveiled one of the more unusual privacy devices to surface in recent years. The Mutalk 2 is a wearable microphone designed to prevent people around you from hearing what you are saying while still transmitting your voice clearly to a connected device.

The concept is straightforward. The Mutalk 2 seals over the mouth and nose using a soft rubber gasket. When you speak, the device acoustically traps and dampens your voice so that anyone nearby hears only faint, unintelligible mumbling. At the same time, your speech is captured internally and sent cleanly to a phone, laptop, or PC via Bluetooth or a standard 3.5 mm audio jack.

In practice, the device works largely as advertised. Speech transmitted to the connected device remains clear and usable for calls, gaming, or voice chat, while external sound leakage is significantly reduced. It is not complete silence, but it is enough to prevent casual eavesdropping or effective lip reading in most everyday situations. Comfort is also better than expected for a sealed face device, with removable components that make cleaning and longer sessions more practical.

The most obvious drawback is visual. The Mutalk 2 is impossible to ignore, resembling a cross between a compact gas mask and a duck billed platypus. Wearing it in public is likely to attract attention, which somewhat undermines the goal of discretion. This limits its appeal in cafés, offices, or public transport, even if the privacy benefits are real.

At around $200, the Mutalk 2 is clearly a niche product. It makes the most sense for gamers, late night callers, people working in shared living spaces, or anyone with a genuine need to block nearby listeners without relying on soundproof rooms. As a solution to modern privacy concerns, it is effective, slightly absurd, and very much a sign of how far personal audio technology is willing to go to solve a specific problem.
