Today the formal part of the visit began, with a visit to the offices of project partner FHI 360 and an introduction to the programme by them, and representatives from the US State Department.
We were also spoiled with a visit to the famous Bobby Van’s Steakhouse, where, while conscious of the need to be able to stay awake for a presentation in the afternoon, I felt it would be wrong to not order the steak – which was done to perfection! – and the cheesecake for desert – which, while still not the best cheesecake I’ve ever tasted, was definitely right up there.
Tony, and Tokpa (from Liberia) were shocked at the size of the steak knife we were supplied with for our main course, so I kindly invited them to visit Namibia…😁.
I needn’t have worried about falling asleep in the afternoon session though because Dr. Jeremy Mayer was an outstanding lecturer – knowledgeable, humorous, and clearly not afraid to express ‘controversial’ opinions. He made the dull sounding topic of “Overview of the U.S. Federal Government and the Political Process” come to life, and I envy his political science students at George Mason University.
