One more try for Namibia…

Once again, the anticipation and, let’s be honest, the nervousness is building, because Namibia again is getting ready to play at the Rugby World Cup 2023. But this time it’s different – very different. Apart from 8 changes in the starting team named by couch Allister Coetzee, you may ask why that is – after all, it’s in essence just another rugby game. But it’s different for many reasons.

Firstly, this is a game that Namibia can actually win. Against Italy, the All Blacks and Le Bleus they were not really in with a shot. But when they played Uruguay in August on a warm-up tour, they lost by 26 points to 18. It was that close. Secondly, this is Namibia’s last game, so they are going to want to say goodbye to the tournament and gracious hosts France in style. Thirdly, they’ve come off a 96-0 drubbing by France, and knowing the Namibians’ pride, they are going to want to show friend and for that thney’re better than that scoreline.

So, in essence, even tough this will still be a very tough ask, I think, and sincerely hope, that we will see a Namibian team ready to do the impossible. And whether they succeed or fail, we will still be “#backingtheboytjies”, because that is what Namibian rugby supporters are all about. Not just winning, not fair weather supporters, but there because they represent us and beautiful Namibia.
