Today we visited a local affiliate of a regional TV network who the less I say about the visit probably the better, except to say that when I tried to speak to the ‘sports lady’ about Sepp Kuss looking likely to win the Vuelta she had no idea what I was talking about🤦!
We then visited the TV broadcast and production class at the University of Central Florida, and got to watch their weekly, live half hour news show. This was a much more inspiring visit – and I pitched the Sepp Kuss story to them to keep an eye on for next week’s show 😆.
The day ended with what must be the most inspiring visit of the whole trip though – a visit to the small, non-profit Spanish language community station Mas100.7. As small as they are their studio setup is impressive and, because their broadcast reach is only 10 miles, they even have multiple webcams set up to stream their content on FB Live in the form of a TV show!
What is more inspiring than their bare-bones fight to get information and education to their community though is all the other work they do: They have a spare studio that they hire out for dirt cheap to dance studios, local dramatic clubs, and the like, and when those people still can’t afford to pay the fee they have a pay-it-forward campaign where people can ‘sponsor’ classes – I’m happy to say there are two more classes now covered.
They also run community upliftment programs, have computers that people who can’t afford one can come and use to send emails, do job applications, or attend online classes, organise lessons on entrepreneurship and then host ‘market days’ where the participants can sell their products or services, and host both adult and children’s art classes and competitions – highlighting all of this on their very active social media accounts!
