Walvis Bay municipality urges residents to take precautions amid heavy rainfall

The Walvis Bay Municipality has urged residents to take safety precautions following heavy rainfall over the past two days. The Namibia Meteorological Service has warned that the persistent rain may lead to flash floods.

In a statement released on Wednesday, the acting manager for public relations and customer service, Anita Kaihiva, advised residents that water accumulation in certain areas could create hazardous conditions for drivers, pedestrians, and homeowners.

“Avoid driving or walking through large puddles, as they may be deeper than they appear. Reduce speed and increase following distance to prevent skidding and accidents,” she cautioned.

She further advised motorists to use alternative routes if roads are flooded or waterlogged and to ensure their vehicle’s lights and wipers are in good working condition to improve visibility.

Kaihiva also urged pedestrians to wear visible clothing and use sidewalks where possible. Additionally, she requested that residents refrain from opening drain covers or pushing rainwater into the sewer system.

“This can lead to flooding and overloading of the sewerage system. Instead, we kindly ask for patience while our teams attend to flooded areas and work on draining excess water,” she stated.
