Namcol learner appears in Lüderitz court for kidnapping a boy

A 24-year-old learner from the Namibian College of Open Learning (Namcol) in Luderitz was denied bail by the town’s Magistrate’s Court on Monday for allegedly kidnapping a two-year-old boy at Area 7.

The accused, Hendrick Musese, was arrested on Friday after he found two brothers, aged two and seven, playing outside their home, and grabbed the younger child and fled.

//Kharas regional crime investigation coordinator, Nicodemus Mbango, said the matter has been postponed to 22 July for a formal bail application, while the main case was remanded to 30 August.

The boys’ mother, Raura Shivute, told NewsonOne that her older son ran into the house shouting to alert her of the incident.

Shivute said she immediately ran outside and called for help, and the residents chased the accused. She said the boy was rescued while Muese was handed over to the police.

The accused’s older brother, Thomas Musese, said the family was shocked by the incident and did not know him to be capable of such an act.

Thomas claimed his younger brother told him he had consumed alcohol before the incident and could not clearly remember what had happened. These claims have not been independently verified and do not form part of the evidence before the court.

Thomas added that his brother relocated from Rundu to Lüderitz in March this year to enroll at Namcol, where he is upgrading his Grade 11.

Meanwhile, Lüderitz residents have launched an online petition opposing Musese’s release on bail.

Some residents said the incident reminds them of the disappearance of three-year-old Spencer Mandela Nakale, who went missing in Area 7 on 28 December 2020 and whose whereabouts remain unknown.
