Lüderitz Mayor Phillipus Balhao has spoken out about the ongoing controversy surrounding the Crayfish Festival, calling for understanding and transparency as the town council continues its due diligence before making final decisions regarding the event.

In a recent statement, Mayor Balhao emphasized that the Lüderitz Town Council has no ill intentions but is simply fulfilling its responsibility to ensure accountability and good governance.

“It’s just us doing our due diligence,” Balhao stated. “We’ve received legal advice and are working through it with our legal counsel. The aim is to find a swift resolution so that this issue doesn’t overshadow such a significant and positive event for our town.”

The mayor expressed disappointment that the controversy had surfaced during the festival period but remained hopeful for a constructive outcome. He said the council intends to provide a clear and transparent framework for the incoming council expected later this year.

“We want to hand over a blank slate to the new council in November — with proper guidance on fund transfers, trustee responsibilities, and community expectations,” he said.

Balhao also highlighted the need to address misinformation and public confusion around the festival’s purpose and management. He said a community meeting is being planned to clarify how the festival is structured and whether it offers tangible benefits to locals.

“Once the festival concludes, we’ll sit down again and find a resolution — hopefully one that allows us to start planning next year’s Crayfish Festival with greater clarity and unity,” he added.

Despite the challenges, Mayor Balhao commended the town council for taking a principled stance, reaffirming their commitment to responsible leadership.
