One Health Pharmacy, in collaboration with Dr. Charlie Ithete’s Medical Practice, is hosting a community-focused Health Awareness Day this coming Saturday, 26 April, in Kuisebmond, Walvis Bay. The initiative is a response to the growing need for accessible healthcare in low-income communities and aims to provide free health screenings, medical referrals, and nutritional advice.

The event will take place opposite Shop 4, near Shoprite, in the heart of Kuisebmond. It is open to the public and completely free of charge. Services will run from 9:00 AM to 3:00 PM and are available to individuals of all ages—from infants to the elderly.

Health Services at No Cost

Spokesperson Grace Nakalondo said the campaign is aimed at providing preventive care to those who may not have access to regular medical services. “We know that many people delay seeking healthcare due to financial barriers. This initiative is about breaking those barriers and bringing care directly to the community,” she said.

Attendees will benefit from a wide range of services, including blood pressure checks, blood sugar level testing, and Body Mass Index (BMI) assessments. These screenings are vital for early detection of chronic illnesses such as diabetes and hypertension—conditions that have been flagged as leading causes of death in the 2023 National Census.

In addition to screenings, visitors will receive dietary counseling focused on affordable, traditional, and locally available food options. “We want to empower people with knowledge. Nutrition plays a huge role in preventing chronic disease, and we want to show people that they can make healthy choices without needing expensive ingredients,” Nakalondo added.

Partnership for Impact

The initiative is made possible through a partnership with Dr. Charlie Ithete’s Medical Practice. Dr. Ithete and his team will provide medical evaluations for those referred by the pharmacy staff following initial assessments. These consultations will also be free of charge, further lowering the barrier to quality medical advice.

“If we find any red flags during the assessments, those individuals will be referred directly to the doctor on-site,” Nakalondo explained. “This ensures that urgent health issues are not ignored and are addressed immediately.”

Medication Reconciliation for Chronic Patients

In a unique offering, the pharmacy is encouraging individuals currently on chronic medication to bring their health passports for a medicine reconciliation session. This process involves reviewing the patient’s current prescriptions, evaluating their effectiveness, and ensuring that the treatment plan aligns with their current health needs.

“We often see cases where medication is outdated or no longer effective. With a reconciliation process, we can identify those gaps and make sure the patient is on the right path,” said Nakalondo.

This also gives an opportunity for patients to receive updated prescriptions from Dr. Ithete if their condition requires adjustments.

Focus on Kuisebmond and Future Events

While One Health Pharmacy has hosted Health Awareness Days before, this will be the first time such an initiative is held in Kuisebmond. The community, known for its socio-economic challenges, has been specifically chosen to ensure that the most vulnerable populations have access to vital health information and care.

“We are excited to launch this outreach in Kuisebmond,” Nakalondo said. “It’s not just about one day. We’re building a long-term relationship with the community.”

The pharmacy plans to host similar events every four months, with the next one tentatively scheduled for June or July. These regular events will serve to monitor community health trends and offer consistent support.

A Call to Action

Nakalondo urges all residents to attend, regardless of whether they feel unwell. “Prevention is always better than cure. You might feel fine today, but a quick check-up could reveal something important.”

She also emphasized the importance of bringing children and elderly family members. “Health doesn’t discriminate by age. Whether it’s a growth check for a child or a blood pressure reading for a senior, these small steps make a big difference.”
