Information and Communication Minister Emma Theofelus say the government will rebury seven national heroes and former political prisoners on 24 August, two days ahead of the official Heroes’ Day commemoration in the capital.

Theofelus said the former liberation icons will be accorded to the dignity and honour they deserve through the reburials.

The minister made the announcement on Thursday at the Outapi Government Information Centre in the Omusati Region.

The seven individuals include the late Eliaser Tuhadeleni, also known as Kahumba Kandola;  Hafeni Immanuel Shafidi; Fillemon Nduuvu  Immanuel ; Simon Petrus Niilenge; Festus Nehale.

She added that the government will erect symbolic graves for liberation stalwarts Tobias Hainyeko, and Brendan Simbwaye.

Theofelus further said Nathaniel Maxuilili will also be honoured as part of the commemorations.

“The 2026 Heroes Day commemoration (5:10) will begin with a deeply moving and historic occasion.

On the 24th of August 2026, (5:20) seven of our fallen freedom fighters will be accorded the dignity and honour they so (5:27) richly deserve through reburial at the Heroes Acre,” said Theofelus.

Theofelus added that on 25 August, president Netumbo Nandi-Ndaitwah will bestow national honours on more than 1 000 deserving individuals in recognition of their invaluable contributions, bravery, and commitment to the country’s liberation struggle and the attainment of independence.

“Their service reminds us that freedom was achieved through the collective sacrifice of countless Namibians from all walks of life. The National Heroes Day commemoration will then take place on the 26th of August 2026, where Her Excellency, our President, will lead the nation in paying tribute to our heroes and  heroines,” said Theofelus  .

Theofelus said those unable to attend the commemorations in person will be able to follow the proceedings through live broadcasts on various platforms.
