Health ministry has suspended new recruitment due to financial constraints until April 2027. The ministry said this comes after 1770 health workers, including 1 320 nurses, were employed by the end of September 2026.
The ministry’s executive Director, Penda Ithindi, said N$241 million of the N$259 million allocated for health worker recruitment in the 2026/27 financial year had already been spent.
“Due to the limited financial position of the Government, the Ministry, through the Ministry of Finance, has received guidance that the remaining recruitment would only be resumed in the next financial year, commencing in April 2027. However, the recruitment to fill the positions which become vacant due to retirement and other natural attrition reasons will continue to be advertised and filled,” said Ithindi.
Ithindi acknowledged unemployed qualified nurses who serve in all parts of the country, stating that the ministry remains committed to improving working conditions in rural areas by investing in decent accommodation facilities as resources allow.
The ministry also supported the proposal to compile information on available vacancies into a database accessible to unemployed nursing graduates and other health professionals.
The ministry urged unemployed nurses to ensure that their details are up to date with the Nursing Board of Namibia, under the Health Professions Councils of Namibia (HPCNA), ahead of recruitment opportunities that may arise before and during the next financial year
