The German Embassy has generously donated €25,000, or roughly N$500,000, towards the renovation of the Deutsche Evangelisch-Lutherische Kirche (ELCIN-DELK) in Swakopmund. This funding, sourced through the German Federal Foreign Office’s cultural preservation programme, will aid in the renewal of the church’s copper shingles and the restoration of its tower cross.
The church’s roof is currently being renovated, with the restoration of the tower set to follow. These efforts are funded entirely through donations from parishioners. The historic cross on the church’s tower, which was damaged during a 2023 storm, will be replaced. Additionally, the condition of the copper shingles on the roof was found to need renewal.
Since 1912, the church has housed a Walcker organ, originally built in Ludwigsburg, Germany. In 2021, the German Embassy also supported the restoration of this organ with funds from the cultural preservation programme.
