Brazil boosts Namibia’s food security with N$1.97 million WFP Namibia contribution

National Planning Commission (NPC) Director General, Kaire Mbuende, says the impact of community food production projects supported by Brazil and the United Nations (UN) World Food Programme (WFP) in Namibia is evident in improved agricultural production, household incomes and food security across the country.

He made the remarks while receiving the Government of Brazil’s latest contribution to WFP Namibia.

Mbuende said more than 300 smallholder farmers have benefited from the programme, while over 100 have received training in financial management, value addition and market access.

He said communities that once depended on food assistance are increasingly producing their own food and generating an income.

Mbuende made the remarks at the handover ceremony of the Government of Brazil’s Contribution of N$1.97 million to WFP Namibia.

He singled out successes across several regions, including Olukula, where residents harvested more than five tonnes of vegetables and produced over 65 000 eggs, earning recognition as first runner-up in the 2024 Emerging Producer of the Year Awards.

Other achievements include increased vegetable production in Epako, improved nutrition outcomes, fresh produce supplied to expectant mothers in Opuwo, and more than 3.3 tonnes of produce and eggs harvested in Stampriet, with regular contributions to school feeding programmes.

According to the WFP Namibia, Brazil’s N$1.97 million contribution will strengthen food security, nutrition, livelihoods and resilient food systems, benefiting more than 1 000 people.

UN Resident Coordinator, Hopolang Phororo, said the funding reflects the importance of international partnership, solidarity and South-South cooperation in advancing sustainable development.

The UN said Brazil has supported Namibia and the WFP for the past six years with more than N$3.5 million in financial and in-kind assistance.

The latest funding will sustain five Integrated Food Systems Projects in the Otjozondjupa, Omaheke, Hardap, Kunene and Ohangwena Regions.
