Ocean Conservation Namibia (OCN) is a private initiative to rescue seals and other marine animals from entanglements. Every entanglement brings suffering or death.
Entanglements are caused bay discarded or lost fishing gear. Such gear, designed to catch all sorts of marine species, continues working once discarded, leading to high rates of entanglement. Even a thin loop of recreational fishing line, likely discarded during a casual beach fishing trip, can cut relentlessly into an animal’s neck or body. With every movement, the line cut deeper, like a noose that slowly tightens. Fishing lines don’t break under pressure. It’s heartbreaking, especially when you see the evidence like the photo of the whale that got entangled and unfortunately died right here at our coast.
Naude Dreyer and his team are very passionate about their mission of protecting the environment and they do everything that they can, but what is the real number of entangled marine animals? How many are suffering just out of sight, tangled, injured, and slowly wasting away in the crowd? It’s a big job that nobody can do on their own.
