Today marks the final day of voter registration for Namibia’s upcoming Regional Councils and Local Authority Elections scheduled for November.
According to the Electoral Commission of Namibia (ECN), just over 19,000 new voters have registered since the process began on 4 August. While officials have welcomed the turnout, they acknowledged that voter apathy has often dampened participation in past local elections.
ECN Chief Electoral and Referenda Officer, Peter Shaama, urged citizens to seize the last opportunity to register, stressing that active participation strengthens democracy at the grassroots level.
The ECN hopes that increased awareness campaigns and growing interest in community governance will translate into stronger voter engagement this year.
