On 17 June 2025, the Directorate of Veterinary Services in the Ministry of Agriculture, Fisheries, Water and Land Reform issued a statement about the detection of Rabies in a Cape Fur Seal at Walvisbay Lagoon.
Naude Dreyer from Ocean Conservation Namibia was contacted by his sister who came across the seal at the lagoon and they monitored the seal closely until it unfortunately passed away not long after being detected.

The public is urged to look out for any signs of rabies when coming across seals and to report it to the  State veterinary office.

The signs to look out for:
  • Aggressive behaviour
  • Disorentation and uncoordinated movement
  • Unusual vocalizations
  • Excessive salivation
  • Paralysis
  • Lethargy or unresponsiveness

In his weekly update today, Naude tells us more about the circumstances surrounding the case.
