Works ministry debt dries up Gftn taps

todayNovember 2, 2026

Background

Local media reports this morning that tenants in government houses in Grootfontein were left high and dry after the municipality cut services due to more than N$1 million owed by the works ministry. The municipal spokesperson Luke Salomo told The Namibian that the bill equates to about four months of unpaid accounts. The ministry has roughly 100 properties in the town and all the households had their water cut. Individual local authorities face intense revenue collection pressures, with regional councils and towns collectively chasing over N$162 million owed specifically by government ministries, public institutions, and private businesses.
