Police Acting Inspector-General, Major-General Anna-Marie Nainda, has acknowledged that the families of Ingrid Maasdorp and Roslin Fabian were only informed of the arrest of an 18-year-old suspect after the news had already circulated on social media.

Nainda acknowledged that the families should have been informed first but said that, by the time police reached out to them, the information was already circulating online.

Nainda confirmed at a press briefing in Windhoek on Wednesday that an 18-year-old suspect has been charged in connection with last year’s Okahandja murders.

The victims are Ingrid Maasdorp, Roslin Fabian and Beyoncé !Kharuxas.

Fabian was found behind the Veddersdal Cemetery, while !Kharuxas was discovered half-naked in bushes in the town after allegedly being raped and murdered.

When asked by a NewsOnOne journalist whether the families had been informed before the details of the suspect’s arrest became public, Nainda acknowledged that the families should have received the information first.

“Before we reached out to the family while we were busy the information was in the media and it is very unfortunate but all in all the families are informed but it was not supposed to be that. First the family and then the media briefing,” said Naida.

The Head of the Police Forensic Science Institute, Commissioner Nelius Becker, said if it was not for public support, they would not have found the suspect.

“This is where the information is coming from informants from members of the public and it is very important that we have the cooperation . Even this cases of the Okahandja if it was not for the informants had to respond,” said Becker.

Meanwhile, Nainda said police have dealt with more than 60 people of interest in connection with the Okahandja murder cases and continue to receive information to assist with the investigations.
