NCE calls for immediate halt to in-situ uranium leaching

todayNovember 5, 2026

Background

The Namibian Chamber of Environment CEO, Dr Chris Brown, has defended marine phosphate mining, arguing that concerns about its environmental impact are based on misunderstandings. However, he has called for proposed in-situ uranium leaching projects in the Stampriet Aquifer to be stopped immediately, warning of serious environmental and economic risks. Dr Brown says potential groundwater pollution could threaten the shared aquifer, which extends into Botswana and South Africa, putting agriculture, tourism and livelihoods across the Kalahari Basin at risk. Future Media News spoke to Dr Chris Brown.
