The Ministry of Environment is facing a near-15-million-dollar lawsuit after a park ranger allegedly shot and severely injured a geologist in the Namib-Naukluft Park. According to High Court documents, geologist Ricardo Rick Strauss was driving on a public district road near Koppies in September 2024 when two park rangers opened fire on him. Strauss, who was lawfully working in the park for Marenica Energy Namibia, suffered a shattered femur and severe vascular damage, ultimately requiring an above-knee amputation. His legal team is suing the minister and the rangers jointly for nearly 15 million dollars, covering medical costs, structural home modifications, and lost earning potential. The ministry is defending and the matter is before Judge Shafimana Ueitele today for a case management conference.
