The Lechem Foundation is appealing for greater community support as it seeks to expand its food security and youth mentorship programmes to reach more vulnerable children.
Speaking to Future Media News, Lechem Foundation Director Lisa Marie Maritz said the organisation’s name comes from the Hebrew word for “bread” and reflects its mission of providing “bread for today and hope for tomorrow.” Beyond supplying food, the foundation focuses on mentorship, training and helping community organisations become more sustainable.
Maritz said the foundation currently reaches approximately 3,000 children every week by providing around 6,000 meals through trusted partnerships with community soup kitchens. In addition to food distribution, the organisation runs its Living by Design mentorship programme for teenagers and offers training to strengthen community-based organisations.
Although the foundation has been serving communities through church partnerships for more than 15 years, it formally registered as a welfare organisation during the COVID-19 pandemic to expand its impact.
Maritz said one of the foundation’s long-term goals is to increase the number of children it supports from 3,000 to 5,000. To achieve this, the organisation plans to expand its vegetable garden near Okahandja, where between three and four tonnes of vegetables were harvested this season, with the aim of doubling production in the next planting season.
She said the foundation welcomes donations of protein-rich foods, fresh vegetables and other nutritious items, while also encouraging businesses and volunteers to partner with the organisation through community outreach and food distribution initiatives.
Maritz added that Lechem Foundation remains committed to strengthening existing soup kitchens and helping them become self-sustaining so they can continue serving their communities for years to come.
