Ethiopian clampdown on media continues

todayNovember 3, 2026

Background

Ethiopian authorities have indefinitely suspended the license of The Reporter, one of the country’s last remaining independent newspapers. The Ethiopian Media Authority announced the ban on Monday, accusing the outlet of repeatedly publishing content that contradicts national interests and harms foreign investment, tourism, and diplomacy. The regulatory body added that the suspension will remain in place until the paper meets legal and ethical requirements. The Reporter, which publishes in both English and Amharic, is widely viewed as a critical voice in Ethiopia. The country currently ranks 148th out of 180 nations on the Reporters Without Borders Press Freedom Index.
