Environmental expert backs marine phosphate mining but opposes uranium leaching in Stampriet Aquifer

todayNovember 5, 2026

Background

Namibian Chamber of Environment chief executive Dr Chris Brown has defended marine phosphate mining, arguing that concerns about its environmental impact are based on misunderstandings. Brown, however, has called for proposed uranium leaching projects in the Stampriet Aquifer to be stopped, warning that possible groundwater contamination could have far-reaching consequences. The aquifer is an important underground water resource, and pollution could threaten agriculture, tourism and livelihoods across Namibia, Botswana and South Africa. Brown explains his concerns and position on the two mining activities.
