Anti-foreigner unrest in South Africa raises concerns over African unity

South African political analyst Ongama Mtimka says the anti-foreigner unrest in South Africa risks undermining the country’s Pan-African credentials, disrupting regional trade and damaging its international standing.

Mtimka said the protest reflects growing frustration over illegal immigration and pressure on jobs and public services.

He said South Africans attitudes towards migrants are not one-dimensional, with many recognising that foreign-owned businesses provide affordable, efficient services and contribute to the economy.

South African President Cyril Ramaphosa has urged for peaceful protests, while authorities have deployed thousands of police officers and placed law enforcement on high alert to prevent violence.

Mtimka said the South African government remains conscious of its image as a country committed to human rights and African solidarity.

South Africa Broadcasting Corporation journalist, Sophie Mokoena, earlier reported that Johannesburg is seeing anti-immigration protests, with some businesses closing and unrest in parts of townships, adding that the situation is organised but still volatile despite strong police presence.
