How to Make Homemade Mayonnaise
Mayonnaise is a great accompaniment that can be used on sandwiches, salads, and many other dishes. It is also a relatively easy to make at home and most people feel too intimidated to try and make it. The good news is that it’s really simple. Here’s the recipe:
Ingredients:
- 1 large egg yolk
- 1 teaspoon Dijon mustard
- 1/2 teaspoon salt
- 1/4 teaspoon black pepper
- 1 cup vegetable oil
Instructions:
- In a medium bowl, whisk together the egg yolk, mustard, salt, and pepper.
- Slowly drizzle in the vegetable oil while whisking constantly.
- Continue whisking until the mayonnaise has thickened and is smooth.
- If the mayonnaise is too thick, you can add a tablespoon of water or milk to thin it out.
- Store the mayonnaise in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 1 week.
Tips:
- Use a good quality egg yolk for the best flavour.
- Make sure the oil is at room temperature before you start whisking. This will help the mayonnaise to emulsify properly.
- Don’t over whisk the mayonnaise, or it will become too thick.
- If the mayonnaise breaks, you can try adding a teaspoon of lemon juice or vinegar to help it come together.
Remember…
- You can also use an immersion blender to make the mayonnaise. A food processor can also be used, but it is important to use the pulse function so that the mayonnaise doesn’t become too thick.
- If you don’t have Dijon mustard, you can use any type of mustard that you like.
- You can add other flavours to the mayonnaise, such as garlic, herbs, or spices.
