HOW TO…THE GOOGLE EDITION

But there are some other interesting questions people are asking Google.  We’ve attempted to answer them for you in the easiest way possible.

HOW TO MAKE PANCAKES

Pancake rule number 1:  Don’t judge thyself on the quality of the first pancake.  The first pancake of a batch is always a flop.  Always.  Also, probably don’t judge yourself on the second one either.

Pancake rule number 2:  Only use a pan you can trust to be non-stick.  Usually, the old battered-up aluminium ones work best.

Pancake rule number 3:  Put a lid over your cooked stack, so that the sugar melts and the pancakes stay warm.

A failsafe recipe:

  • 1 egg
  • 1 cup cake flour
  • 1 cup water
  • 1/4 teaspoon salt
  • 1/2 cup sunflower oil

Whisk all the ingredients together, until the batter is well-mixed and bubbly.  Preferably, let it rest in the fridge for 30 minutes, but this step can be skipped.  Heat a few drops of oil in a frying pan.  Scoop one soup ladle full of batter into the pan, and swirl so that it covers the whole pan base.  Fry on medium-high heat until the batter starts to make bubbles.  The bubbles mean it’s ready to be flipped over.  Cook for another minute, remove from the pan and sprinkle generously with cinnamon sugar.

HOW TO MAKE FUDGE

We assume you want to make fudge because your kids are at home.  Translate:  you want to treat them, but you don’t have a lot of time.  Here is a recipe for very quick chocolate fudge.

In a small saucepan, heat the following ingredients, stirring constantly until the sugar has melted:

  • 335 ml sugar
  • 1/4 teaspoon salt
  • 3 tablespoons butter
  • 165ml evaporated milk

Let the mixture simmer for 5 minutes, stirring it all the time.  Remove from the heat, and mix in the following ingredients:

  • 110g marshmallows
  • 300g milk chocolate
  • 2 teaspoons instant coffee powder
  • 2 teaspoons vanilla essence

Pour the mixture into a rectangular pan lined with wax paper, and sprayed with non-stick cooking spray.  Place it in the fridge to set, and cut into blocks.  Keep the finished fudge in an airtight container.
